The Costco Gas Guide 2026: What Costco Actually Says About Its Gas, How Much Less Members May Pay, How to Pay at the Pump, and Why Gas Won’t Earn Your 2% Reward

The Costco gas guide 2026 comes down to a few simple questions: what is in the tank, how much less do members really pay, how do you pay at the pump, and when should you fill up. Today is October 22, 2026, with the holiday driving season ahead, so this is a good time to get the details straight. Costco's own page says very little about price, so we separate what Costco says from what independent guides report, and we flag anything that cannot be verified.

What Costco Says About Its Gas

Costco's own gas station page makes a handful of claims:

  • It has been doing this since 1995. Costco says it opened its first gas station that year "with a commitment to members to provide high quality gasoline."

  • Fuel types. Regular and premium at its stations, and diesel at some locations.

  • Top Tier certified. Kirkland Signature Gasoline "has been certified to meet TOP TIER performance standards," and Kirkland Signature Diesel at select locations holds the same certification. Costco says its fuel is formulated with deposit control additives that help reduce engine deposit buildup.

  • Prices. Costco describes them as "consistently low, member-exclusive prices" and says members can check prices in the Costco app. The page gives no specific prices or discounts.

How Much Less Do Members Pay?

Costco does not publish a savings number, so we rely on independent guides, which we have not verified. One independent site says regular unleaded typically runs about 10 to 30 cents per gallon below nearby stations, and up to about 50 cents in high-cost markets such as Los Angeles, with a wider gap on premium. Treat that as a rough range, not a promise. The only way to know your savings is to compare the price in the Costco app with the stations on your route.

A quick way to see what that means for you:

  • If you buy 15 gallons a week and save 20 cents a gallon, that is $3.00 a week, or about $156 a year.

  • If you buy 8 gallons a week and save 10 cents, that is $0.80 a week, or about $42 a year.

Those are our own illustrations using round numbers, not reported averages. Plug in your own gallons and your own price gap.

How to Pay at the Pump

Payment rules are where members get caught. An independent guide reports that the pumps accept Visa credit cards and Costco Shop Cards, and that cash, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover are not accepted. The same guide is inconsistent about debit cards, saying in one place Visa debit and in another "most debit cards." Rules can change and can differ by location, so check the signage at the pump or ask a Costco employee before you rely on a card.

The same guide notes that a Costco-branded Visa card from Citi is reported to earn 5 percent back on gas at Costco, with an annual spending cap shared across categories. Check the current card terms before counting on it.

Does Gas Count Toward the Executive 2% Reward?

No. Costco's Executive rewards terms list gasoline as an excluded purchase, along with tobacco, Costco Shop Cards, and postage stamps. If you are deciding between Gold Star and Executive, do not count gas spending toward the roughly $3,250 break-even.

Do You Need a Membership?

Generally yes. Costco calls fuel "another benefit of a Costco membership." An independent guide says the exception is a Shop Card that a member preloads and gives to a non-member to use at the pump. Confirm the current rule with Costco if you plan to try it.

When Should You Fill Up?

Costco prices are not a secret game, but timing can help a little. One independent guide cites an analysis from GasBuddy saying Sunday has been the cheapest day to buy gas in most states, and that timing a fill-up well saves only a few cents per gallon. It also says that in states where prices rise and fall in cycles, such as Michigan, Ohio, Texas, and Florida, waiting a few days after a price spike can be worth much more. These are secondhand claims, so use them as hints and watch your own local prices in the app.

Practical timing tips that do not depend on price data:

  • Beat the lines. Weekday mornings and later evenings are usually calmer than the afternoon rush. Hours vary by warehouse, and one guide reports most stations opening around 6 a.m. on weekdays and closing around 9:30 p.m. Check your warehouse in the app.

  • Fill up when the tank is low, not just when the price is low. A half-empty tank filled on a good day saves more than a perfect-timing top-off.

  • Combine trips. Gas is the easiest stop to pair with a warehouse visit.

Premium, Diesel, and Ethanol

Costco offers regular and premium, and diesel at some locations. One independent guide says the regular and premium are standard blends with up to 10 percent ethanol and that there is no ethanol-free option. If you drive a car or equipment that needs ethanol-free fuel, check with your local station.

Common Gas Mistakes

  • Assuming every Costco gas station accepts the card in your wallet.

  • Counting gas toward your Executive reward.

  • Driving far out of your way to save a few cents.

  • Waiting in the afternoon rush when the morning is open.

  • Forgetting to check the price in the app before you leave.

  • Assuming savings are the same in every city.

  • Missing that hours differ from the warehouse's hours.

Why a Costco Gas Guide 2026 Is Worth Reading Before the Holidays

Gas is one of the most visible Costco member benefits, and one of the easiest to misunderstand. The savings are real for many members, but they depend on where you live, how much you drive, and how you pay. A few minutes of checking the app and the payment rules saves frustration at the pump.

Quick Cheat Sheet

  • Is Costco gas Top Tier? Costco says its Kirkland Signature gasoline is certified.

  • How much cheaper? Independent guides report roughly 10 to 30 cents per gallon, but it varies. Check the app.

  • How do I pay? Reported: Visa credit cards and Costco Shop Cards. Confirm at the pump.

  • Does gas earn the Executive 2% reward? No.

  • Do I need a membership? Generally yes.
