The Costco warehouse club comparison guide 2026 answers the question every shopper with a membership card in their wallet eventually asks: should I be at Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club, or more than one? Today is October 22, 2026, and with the holidays coming, many households are deciding where to spend a lot of money. This guide compares the three clubs on the things that can actually be compared fairly: membership fees, the cash-back rewards, coupons, returns, and a few services. It does not crown a price winner, because we could not find reliable, sourced price data, and we explain why below.

A note on sources. Fees and caps differ between the independent articles we reviewed, so we used the most recent one, dated September 23, 2026, and we flag where another source disagrees.

Clubs change their terms, so confirm everything on each club's website before you join or upgrade.

Membership Fees

As reported in a September 2026 comparison:

  • Costco: Gold Star $65 a year and Executive $130 a year. There is also a $65 Business tier, and affiliate cards cost $65 each, according to that article. Costco's own Executive terms confirm the $65 upgrade and the $130 total at renewal.

  • Sam's Club: $60 basic and $120 for the premium Plus tier.

  • BJ's Wholesale Club: $60 basic and $120 for the premium Club+ tier.

Another independent article we reviewed listed lower Sam's Club and BJ's fees ($50 and $110 at Sam's, and $55 and $110 at BJ's).

Because the two sources conflict, check the current fees on each club's site before you decide.

The 2% Cash-Back Tier

All three clubs offer a premium membership that pays about 2 percent back on qualifying purchases, but the annual caps differ, per the September article:

  • Costco Executive: up to $1,250 per year. Costco's own terms confirm the cap.

  • Sam's Club Plus: up to $750 per year.

  • BJ's Club+: up to $500 per year.

The other independent article listed a $500 cap for Sam's Club Plus, so verify the current number.

The Break-Even Math for Each Upgrade

The upgrade pays for itself when 2 percent of your qualifying spending equals the extra fee:

  • Costco: the upgrade costs $65 more, so the break-even is $65 divided by 0.02, which is $3,250 a year.

  • Sam's Club: if the upgrade costs $60 more ($60 to $120), the break-even is $3,000 a year.

  • BJ's: with the same $60 difference, also $3,000 a year.

And the point at which each club's cap stops the rewards from growing: about $62,500 of qualifying spending at Costco ($1,250 cap), $37,500 at Sam's Club if the cap is $750, and $25,000 at BJ's if the cap is $500. These are our own calculations from the reported fees and caps. Remember that each club excludes certain purchases from the reward, such as gas at Costco, so your qualifying spend is lower than your total spend.

Coupons

This is one of the clearest differences in the September comparison. BJ's accepts manufacturers' coupons, though not online or digital ones unless they come through the BJ's gallery. Sam's Club and Costco do not accept manufacturers' coupons. If you are a dedicated coupon user, that matters. Costco's savings come from its monthly coupon book, which is a discount funded by the supplier and applied at the register, and from everyday pricing.

Returns

  • Costco and Sam's Club: most merchandise can be returned at any time, with category-specific rules. At Costco, electronics have a 90-day window, and some items such as gift cards cannot be returned. At Sam's Club, the article notes rules for items such as heavy equipment and prescriptions.

  • BJ's: returns are reported as limited to 365 days.

See our Costco holiday return policy guide for the full list of Costco exceptions.

Services and Extras

  • Curbside pickup: BJ's offers it, free, with a $50 minimum for standard members and none for Club+. Sam's Club offers it with a $50 minimum for standard members and none for Plus. The September article says Costco does not offer curbside pickup.

  • Gas: The article reports that BJ's Club+ members get 5 cents back per gallon on top of already discounted gas prices, which helps if you live near a BJ's station. Costco gas does not count toward the Executive reward.

  • Early shopping: Costco Executive and Sam's Club Plus members get early hours. The article says Plus members also get up to 12 hours of early access to sale events.

  • Travel: Costco and BJ's sell vacation packages. Sam's Club offers travel services individually.

  • Telehealth: Sam's Club (from $0 for eligible patients) and Costco (from $29) offer it. BJ's does not.

  • Students: The article says BJ's has the best student offer.

Why There Is No Price Winner Here

You will see articles that claim one club wins on groceries by a specific dollar amount. We reviewed one such comparison and chose not to use it: the basket prices were not traced to a named source, and its totals did not match its own line items. Prices depend on your region, your brands, and the week. The honest answer is that all three clubs usually beat a standard supermarket on many bulk items, and which one wins for your household depends on what you buy.

How to Decide in Twenty Minutes

  1. Check which clubs are within a reasonable drive. The best membership is the one you will use.

  2. Write down your ten most-bought items. Include brand and size.

  3. Compare unit prices (per ounce, per count) on the clubs' websites or apps for those ten items.

  4. Add up fees and any reward. Use the break-even numbers above for your likely spend.

  5. Count the extras you will actually use, such as gas, curbside, travel, or coupons.

  6. Try one club's free trial or guest day if available, and check the terms before you rely on them.

  7. Re-check once a year. Prices, fees, and perks change.

Common Comparison Mistakes

  • Comparing a Costco price per package with a Sam's Club price per ounce.

  • Assuming the biggest package is the cheapest per unit.

  • Ignoring the drive to the warehouse.

  • Counting gas or other excluded spending toward the reward.

  • Paying for two premium memberships when one club covers most of your needs.

  • Relying on a single article's fees or caps without checking the club's site.

  • Buying more than you can use just because it is cheaper per unit.

Why a Costco Warehouse Club Comparison Guide 2026 Starts With Your Own Receipts

The best comparison is the one built from your own purchases. The fees and rewards above give you the framework, and your receipts give you the numbers. Many households end up happiest with one club chosen carefully, rather than two memberships used halfway.

Quick Cheat Sheet
